White Hearts

Most nail sets put a heart somewhere. This one made a different decision: a heart on every nail. Not the same heart repeated by machine — ten hearts drawn by hand, one at a time, each one slightly different in the way that handwriting is always slightly different even when the intention is the same. The mauve-pink shimmer base was built first — a colour chosen for how it makes white look: not stark, not clinical, but warm, like a line drawn in cream against something soft. The shimmer embedded throughout gives the base a glow that changes in different lights, the way skin does when it catches the sun at a low angle. And then the hearts. Each one was drawn with a fine brush — a single continuous line that begins at the left curve, rises to the top, dips into the centre, rises again, and comes down to the point at the bottom. In practice this means the brush must maintain the same pressure for the entire movement, which is harder than it sounds. In practice this means ten nails, ten attempts, ten continuous lines, each one checked before the next was started. The result is ten hearts that are consistent without being identical — made by a hand that loves what it makes, on a base that deserved the attention.
