Ocean Marble

Water does not move in straight lines. It curves, it doubles back, it accelerates in some places and slows in others, and it is never exactly the same twice. This set was made from that understanding. The cream base was applied first — warm, smooth, the colour of dry sand. And then the teal was loaded onto a fine brush and drawn across the surface in a single, uninterrupted movement — curving upward, then doubling back, then rising again — the way a wave looks when you are looking at it from the side at the exact moment before it breaks. White lines were pulled through the teal in the same session — thinner, lighter, the foam at the crest of a wave that is moving fast. The composition on each nail began at a different point and travelled in a different direction, because no two waves begin in exactly the same place or travel in exactly the same direction. After the waves were placed, the brush was rinsed and the whole process was begun again for the next nail. Ten nails. Ten waves. Each one unrepeatable. Each one made by a hand that has looked at enough water to know how it moves — and practiced enough to be able to make something else move the same way.
