There is a tradition of painting blue on white that is centuries old and has never gone out of style. This set was made in that tradition — but for hands instead of plates, for fingers instead of vases. The cream base was chosen as the most faithful ground for the indigo that follows: warm white, the colour of unglazed porcelain, the colour of something waiting to be made beautiful. The bow frames were drawn first on each nail — a ribbon tied at the top, a loop at the bottom, the oval that it creates running down the centre of the nail like a cameo space waiting for its portrait. The botanical blooms were painted inside and around these frames — each flower hand-drawn with a fine brush, the petals reaching outward with the organic confidence of something that grew rather than was placed. Tiny dots scatter between them like seeds, like dew, like the kind of detail that is too small to name and too present to miss. Every stroke in this set was made freehand, without stencil, without template, by a hand that has spent enough time with a brush to know where to stop and where to continue. This is the most quietly extraordinary illustrated set in the collection.
