Watching Over You

There is a kind of beauty that asks for almost nothing — and delivers everything. This set was made from that understanding. Nine of the ten nails are clean: soft blush-pink base, white tip, nothing extra. They are the kind of nails that make a person's hands look elegant without effort — the kind of nails that work at a meeting, at a dinner, at a wedding, at a Tuesday. And then the tenth nail. On it, a tiny eye was painted by hand — impossibly small, impossibly precise. The iris a deep blue that took several applications to reach the right depth. The whites of the eye perfectly shaped. The lashes — each one drawn individually, one at a time, with a brush barely wider than a human hair — curving upward the way lashes do when they've caught the light. The eye looks back at whoever is looking at it. That is the point. The set is clean. The set is beautiful. And somewhere in the middle of it, something is watching over you. Every nail was made by hand. Including the one that matters most.
