A good press-on manicure is mostly in the prep. Get the size right, clean the nail properly and press for a full ten seconds, and a set can look like a fresh salon job for up to two weeks. Skip those steps and the same nails can lift by evening. This guide walks you through the method our artists use, step by step, so your first set goes on right.
You will need: your press-on set, nail glue or adhesive tabs, a nail file, a cuticle stick and an alcohol prep pad. Every Glossora box already has all of these, so there is nothing else to buy.
Step 1: Find the right size for every finger
Size is the single biggest reason press-ons lift or look fake. A nail that is too wide presses on your skin at the sides and pops off; a nail that is too narrow leaves your natural nail showing at the edges.
- Lay out all the nails in the box and match one to each finger before you open the glue.
- The press-on should cover your nail from side wall to side wall without touching skin.
- Between two sizes? Pick the larger one and file the sides gently until it sits flat.
Not sure? Use our nail size chart with a strip of clear tape and a ruler, or simply WhatsApp us a photo of your hand next to a coin and we will size every finger for you.
Step 2: Prep your natural nails (do not skip this)
Glue sticks to a clean, dry, slightly rough surface. Oil, lotion and moisture are what make press-ons slide off.
- Wash and dry your hands and remove any old polish.
- Push back your cuticles with the cuticle stick. Press-ons should sit on nail, never on cuticle skin.
- Buff the surface lightly with the file, just enough to take the shine off.
- Wipe each nail with the alcohol pad. This removes natural oils and is the step most people skip.
Tip: apply your press-ons before you put on hand cream, and avoid a long shower or washing dishes for the first hour.
Step 3: Choose glue or adhesive tabs
Both come in the box. Pick based on how long you want to wear the set.
| Nail glue | Adhesive tabs | |
|---|---|---|
| Wear time | Up to 2 weeks | 1 to 3 days |
| Best for | Holidays, weddings, everyday wear | One event, a weekend, trying a new shape |
| Removal | Soak in warm water for about 5 minutes | Peels off gently after a short soak |
| Reuse | Yes, after removing old glue | Yes, very easy |
Running low? You can reorder nail glue or strong nail tabs separately.
Step 4: Press, hold for 10 seconds, repeat
- With glue: put a thin layer on your natural nail and a small drop on the inside of the press-on. Too much glue floods your cuticle; too little leaves air pockets.
- With tabs: stick the tab on your natural nail, peel the top film, and press the nail on.
- Angle the press-on at about 45 degrees, line it up with your cuticle, and lower it towards the tip.
- Press firmly for 10 seconds, pushing on the centre and then along both sides so no air is trapped.
Work one hand at a time, starting with the pinky and finishing with the thumb. Pressing the thumb last stops you knocking the other nails while they set.
Step 5: Finish and shape
Once all ten are on, check each nail from the side. If an edge feels sharp, smooth it with a few light strokes of the file in one direction. Glossora sets come in seven shapes, so most people do not need to shape at all; our shape guide helps you pick the right one before you order.
Common mistakes that make press-ons pop off
- Skipping the alcohol pad. Natural oil is the number one reason nails lift.
- Choosing a size that is too wide. If it touches your skin, it will lift at the side.
- Using too much glue. Excess glue weakens the bond and can stain the cuticle.
- Hot water straight away. Give the glue an hour to cure before long showers or dishes.
- Using nails as tools. Open cans and boxes with your fingertip pads, not your nail tips.
Which set should you try first?
For a first set we usually suggest a medium almond or oval shape and a design that is easy to wear every day. A classic nude French like Bare & Better or a soft Blush Stripe looks natural, while Mirror Gold and Golden Hour Bloom add a little shine for an occasion.
